REVIEW of Focus 49
Tracing the Family Tree
Researching family history is becoming a favourite pastime for many. There may be a specific reason, particularly when relationships or ownership are being questioned. For most, however, trying to find out where they originally came from and who their ancestors really were is both very personal and intriguing. In the dim-darks, tracing the origins of people long gone wasn't easy; but in these days of computers and the internet, one only has to go online to scan databases that someone else has painstakingly researched and transcribed from original sources.
Although some have been lost over time, many records dating from way back are still available to those with the authority to view them; such as historical societies and transcribers like my wife who is an online parish clerk for one small town in the UK. Information of family histories can be found in censuses and records of births, christenings, marriages and deaths. These, however, are handwritten and not always easy to interpret. A look at examples of these scripts in the full article make it clear that mistakes can be made. So, although great care is taken to be accurate, sometimes it isn't always possible.
