Headliners
A few words don't tell the whole story
The rush and tear of modern life precludes checking out everything in detail, and rightly so. There are those, however, who habitually make assumptions based on a mere passing glimpse. Headliners I call them: the ones who see a headline and believe they know all about the following content, so they don't bother reading any further. They do the same with news reports, if they watch the news at all. Sure, the media tends to dramatise, and they frequently repeat stories for effect, sometimes during the same broadcast. It can be boring, certainly; probably unnecessary too; but occasionally a small item of content that hasn't already been mentioned may pop up, perhaps on a different channel, that could shed new light on the subject; and should they miss it because they imagine it to be more old news, those viewers remain in ignorance.
Perhaps none of this matters, particularly when it simply reiterates information that has been seen numerous times and is happening a world away. Unfortunately, the headlining habit often extends to issues closer to home; like updates sent from financial and legal institutions. Filing or binning these without reading may disadvantage the recipient and cause problems when the rules have changed, but the future actions of the individual concerned haven't. They just carry on the same way they always have, assuming everything will be alright. Will it, though? If it comes back to bite they may think that next time they'd better read more than the headline.
