Staying Cool in Summer
Air conditioning is expensive, but there are other ways to stay cool

2026 has been a bad year for the Northern Hemisphere. Higher than normal temperatures have seen bushfires in many countries that never usually expect the like. As for people, heatstroke, especially for the old and very young, has in some instances resulted in fatalities. Everyone, however, is affected by extreme heat and need to find some way to stay cool. Here in Australia we have been living with hot summers for centuries and we know of a few simple changes that can make living conditions more comfortable.

The sun, of course, is the major generator of heat; sheltering from it by staying indoors or under a shady area, however, doesn't always do the trick. Heat radiating from surfaces such as bitumen, walls and even grass not only warms the immediate area but also extends to nearby buildings initially outside, then transferring to the interior. Direct sunlight on walls and windows causes heat to penetrate raising the inside temperature considerably. There are ways, however, to minimise this.

It is really a matter of figuring out where the heat is coming from, then stopping it. Double-glazed windows only work until the heat reaches the inside pane; creating a barrier outside such as exterior blinds or shade cloth is better. As for staying cool, there are air conditioners which can be expensive. A cheaper alternative is an electric fan. And the mistake many make is believing that opening doors and windows to let the breeze in will cool things down. But what if the air outside is warmer than inside...?
