Quizzing Exercises the Mind
entertainment and brain stimulus in one
Physical fitness is important, but mental health can often be taken for granted. The brain is an amazing machine that seems to keep going all on its own, coping with a multitude of issues every single minute of the day. Many of the tasks it is responsible for are done on auto pilot, those routine things that are so repetitive that we don't really have to think about them. This is good because it permits time to concentrate on the more complex matters that crop up on occasions. So, for peace of mind, keeping the brain active and looking after its wellbeing is essential.
Perhaps one of the main concerns as people get older is memory loss. It does happen frequently and everyone, young or old, suffers from it from time to time. That, however, isn't much comfort when the forgetful episodes become more often. Here's where exercise can help - a mental equivalent of physical jerks, if you like. Doing puzzles like crosswords is good, but we've found a better, most enjoyable way to achieve this by watching TV quiz shows and participating in them at home. The problem we found in the early days was that most are quick-fire questions requiring spontaneous answers and our brains weren't up to the task. So now we record the programs and when we play them back we use the remote to pause after each question allowing us time to ponder and give the brain a workout as we try to remember the answers. It's not cheating and it does improve memory function. Why don't you try it and keep the dreaded dementia and Alzheimer's at bay?
