The Brain Invaders
The Meningitis and Meningococcal bacteria can be life-threatening

Although these diseases are not a frequent occurrence they can be deadly. The meninges are protective membranes that surround the brain and spinal cord. Once penetrated by the Meningitis virus or bacteria they cause severe inflammation and can be fatal. As such they are two of the most dangerous diseases anyone can contract.

Apparently the bacteria are present in the back of the nose and throat just waiting for a break in the meninges. This can occur by something as simple as a squirt from a garden hose or a rush of water from jumping into a swimming pool. Kids do it all the time. Parents may have been warned about the dangers of Amoebic Meningitis in pools that have not been sufficiently chlorinated; and they would have advised their children not to do bombies; but kids forget.

Common symptoms are fever, headache, vomiting, loss of appetite tiredness and a number of others which could be attributed to many illnesses; and on occasions Meningitis is the last to be considered. In some cases in Australia, an attending nurse at a hospital has dismissed the parent's concern and sent the child home with Paracetamol. The unfortunate result was death! So, should this be your reception, insist on a qualified doctor's examination before it's too late...!
