REVIEW of Money 50
All Contributions Totally Necessary
sharing the load of household expenses
People living together under the same roof need to co-operate. Whether rented or owned, a property incurs expenses, and all who contribute to them should share the burden of any repayments. Utilities such as electricity and gas, maybe also a telephone landline and the Internet service, they are most likely used by everyone and it is unfair to expect one person to be stuck with the bills. And don't forget food which comes at an ever-increasing cost.
In their early years, children can't be expected to pay the price for living at home; at least, not in monetary terms; but they should be encouraged to help around the place and give something back. Their allowances come out of someone's pocket, so them having to work for it not only introduces them to what will be expected of them when they eventually get their own place; but might hopefully instil a sense of responsibility. Even if they decide to remain at home well after leaving school; assuming they have some source of income, they ought to be putting part of it into the pot to help with the family budget. Letting them get away with freeloading will do neither you nor them any good whatsoever.
