REVIEW of Money 51
Overpricing the Tourist Dollar
increasing prices reduces tourist numbers
Income from tourists is a necessary boost to many places, particularly those which are off the beaten track. The majority of popular attractions, however, are usually easily accessible - towns and venues that provide special and unique experiences for the traveller. There may be a National Park nearby, a seaside resort boasting charter fishing trips, or maybe a marine sanctuary where dolphins can be viewed and even handfed. Aside from many of these charging a fee, people visiting will want to eat and perhaps find accommodation. These also cost, and in many instances prices charged are far more than is reasonable.
Anyone treated in this way is unlikely to visit again; so the money they shelled out is a once off never to be repeated. Imagine the tales these disgruntled people will be telling when they return home; then their friends will be looking for somewhere else to spend their vacations. It's bad enough if visitors are holidaying in their own State or country; but the ones from overseas will be spreading the warning around the world - don't go there unless you want to get ripped off.
The result is less visitors and less income prompting the need to increase prices in order to maintain profits. And so it snowballs. Something should be done to halt the spiral; but the ones who could do it have their heads well and truly in the sand.
