REVIEW of Money 52
Keeping the Banks Honest
When it comes to finances, Watch Your Back!

Surely you can trust banks. They are safer than stuffing your money in a mattress and they care about their customers, don't they? Well, not all of them do, and the odd one is outright dishonest; and this is because times have changed. The old standards have either slipped or gone right out of the window. These money minders are about profits for themselves. Certainly, they can benefit customers by paying interest on invested cash, a little anyway; and they loan money on which they charge interest - much more, as it happens, than perhaps they should which is perhaps arguable. Individuals need to look closely at their own finances to decide if they are getting a fair deal, or are being taken for a ride.

It pays to check on protocols like when loan repayments are due, and especially due dates of credit-card accounts. They don't stay the same and you can get caught out by missing a payment date; for example: the credit card roll-over (that's when one month finishes and the next month begins) always used to be on the 6th; so you pay the balance just before that date. Then you find a penalty charge on your next statement for late payment. And that's thanks to the bank changing the due-by date to the 4th ! How kind of them... And bear in mind: legally they can do this without notice. Check out the other shifty practices in the full article.
