Thats the Way the Money Goes
a tight budget can't afford coffee shops and lunch bars
The title seems to refer to gambling, but this isn't about Poker or betting on the horses. It's how we can blow our money on ordinary everyday things without thinking. Except for those on a good income, making ends meet isn't easy for the rest of us. Planning what we buy and eat is essential, not just from the health aspect either. The weekly budget can take a hammering if we aren't careful. So, when out shopping, for example, hunting for specials and reduced prices is taken for granted; then we slip up. Although lunch time is still a couple of hours off, we become hungry and would kill for a coffee. Oh look, there's a café, and in we go for a latte. While waiting for that, we notice the heated cabinet with sausage rolls, dim sims and buckets of chips. Why not? we think - it's only a few dollars. Maybe it wouldn't matter if it was simply a one-off; succumbing more frequently on a regular basis, however, and we could be looking at anything up to $100 in a week. Bang goes the budget!
Resisting the urge to buy these convenient hunger-busters can easily be avoided. Knowing you're going to be out and about for long periods, it's a good idea to prepare a sandwich or two and take flask of hot water with the makings for tea and coffee. Then all you'll need is a bench somewhere to sit and enjoy in the knowledge that the short break hasn't cost a fortune.
