REVIEW of Money 54
The Working Holiday
working while travelling is fun - if you follow the rules

Travelling around Australia is enjoyable, in many instances an eye-opener; and it can be profitable. In the early years of the great depression many had to leave their homes and families to seek work wherever it could be found. Sundowners they were called, itinerants who trudged the roads taking jobs doing anything just to survive. These days, quite a few do it out of choice. They could be grey nomads with their caravans - we did it in a tent - or they might be foreign back-packers working to fund their holidays while experiencing what the country has to offer. Jobs, we found, were plentiful; as long as you don't mind hard work.

Fruit-picking was our choice and we did that for seven years, making a good living from it. There is, of course, more than just farm work. Shops, cafes, holiday resorts and restaurants need casual workers; and backpackers seem to gravitate towards these venues. But they should be aware that there are certain rules to follow; in particular with regard to visas and how long they may be allowed to work in a specific area. As for us Aussies, we can go and do pretty much as we want; but there are also rules for us. Doing the wrong thing by employers and other co-workers will not go down well. Check out what and why in the full article.
