REVIEW of Money 55
The Lotteries
Every punter wants to win the big one
Gambling has been around since forever. The numbers racket of old times has been replaced by the modern day lottery. Everyone who pays to enter the competition lives in hope of winning the big one, despite the phenomenal odds against success. So, why bother?
Gambling eventually becomes a habit that is as hard to break as smoking or alcoholism. Like playing the roulette wheel, punters believe that if they can come up with the right system it will one day bring home the money. For example: putting the same numbers into each draw week after week must surely be the way to go. The law of averages says so. What these people don't seem to realise is that each new game is exactly that, and because their numbers haven't come up yet is no guarantee that they ever will.
Over the years gamblers pour in good money after bad, sometimes increasing subsequent bets to win back what they've already lost only to lose that as well. It truly is a mug's game. Wouldn't it be better if they squirreled away the weekly cost and kept it for a rainy day? Judging by the multitude of punters who continue to fritter away their hard-earned bucks, it would seem not.
