REVIEW of Focus 53
Parkinson's Disease
A progressive, debilitating disease of the nervous system

Parkinson's disease generally affects middle-aged to elderly males, but not consistently so. The main cause is a decrease in the brain's Dopamine levels and this interrupts the messages sent from the brain to those nerve cells which control movement throughout the body. As an example, sufferers may intend to walk forward; but although the upper body starts moving, the message to activate the legs is delayed and as their feet are still planted on the spot they begin to topple, only managing a shuffling stutter to regain their balance. Other effects can be an uncontrollable shaking, particularly in the hands making simple everyday tasks difficult.

There is no cure for Parkinson's disease. A number of medications have been found to help ease the symptoms, but their efficacy can be affected by medications being taken for other medical conditions; so specialists have to perform a juggling act to get the mix right. No two patients are the same and the progress of the disease, be it slow or fast, means individual treatment by specialists is necessary. For more complex cases there are certain surgical procedures such as Deep-brain stimulation and Gamma knife treatment which are dealt with in the full article.
