A Minute of Inattention - a Lifetime of Regret
Children rarely see the dangers - adults always should
It should go without saying that kids are curious and adventurous, which is fine as long as their carers are aware of the dangers they can put themselves in. The complete article deals with a number of these dangers and how best to prevent them. In this brief review I'll mention just a few.
Kids and kitchens don't always mix well. Electric white goods, sharp cutting implements, hot ovens and food cooking on the stove top; these are things a child is attracted to. They've seen mum or dad doing stuff and figure they could try it themselves. Not a good idea unless they are closely supervised. It's the same in the rest of the house. There are electrical sockets to poke things in; dangerous chemicals to drink; pills that look like sweets; and even the toys they play with may have small parts that can be removed and swallowed. And don't forget the battery-operated ones. If they ingest a button battery it could prove fatal.
Having a bath is often fun for both kids and adults; but if left unattended a small child can drown in just a few inches of water. So, the bottom line is that kids need watching constantly. That's the most important job of carers; and to be distracted from this for as little as a few seconds can mean a lifetime of regret.
